The Yokohama Museum of Art's next exhibition, "NARA Yoshitomo: a bit like you and me..." commences July 14. The museum hosted Nara's first large-scale solo exhibition, "I DON'T MIND, IF YOU FORGET ME." in 2001, so 11 years have passed since what was essentially his debut show to present his work to both a domestic and international audience. Since then, Nara has continued to challenge himself and build up his own unique world view. The new exhibition will begin with his first-ever bronze sculpture, and almost all of the works on display will be new.

To coincide with the new exhibition, we have made considerable changes to the presentation of our collection. We have established the human form as the overriding theme and brought together relevant works from various historical periods and genres. Of course, the presentation will feature works from throughout Nara Yoshitomo's career, so we urge you to take the time to see all of the galleries, including the Photography怀Gallery, which is right at the back of the museum.

The museum's Educational Department, which was established this year, has been busy preparing a wide variety of programs focusing on both the creation and appreciation of art. In addition to holding gallery talks on the collection, we will hold an event designed to encourage appreciation of the collection, "Children’s Summer Festa," from August 7 till 15. At the Citizens’ Workshop, a collage-making course will be hosted by Yokohama Triennale 2011 artist Usukubo Kaoru from the end of July. And, in August and September, we will hold classes for making a small bronze sculpture, ceramics, printmaking and more. This summer I encourage you to come and deepen your enjoyment of looking, making, and learning at the Yokohama Museum of Art.
