The Third Dimension三维
by Smart Gallery
Location: Smart Gallery, Shanghai
Date: 8 Nov 2008 - 30 Jan 2009

From the second dimension to the third dimension
What if all of a sudden a lotus flower would jump from a canvas into the reality of the third dimension? What if an intricate woven pattern would materialize in reality in the scope of our sight? Is it possible for a dance movement to freeze and appear in front of our very eyes in the physical world?

Artists from different times have faced the same questions. For some of them, the approach has been to add ‘depth’ into their canvases; others play with color, illusions or perspective. ‘How does the artist create/represent nature so perfectly?’ we exclaim in awe, seeing a photographic-like view of a landscape or the modeling that gives depth to the face of a portrait/still-life and the feeling of texture on a two-dimensional painting.

The artists featured in the current exhibition come from different countries, continents and backgrounds. They have attempted to portray their visions in different ways, styles and materials. No matter where they come from, they share an inner need to create in a three dimensional space, to go beyond two dimensions and take the next step in interacting with or representing the world around them. They have objectified with bold success a third parameter in an earnest effort to offer an alternative to the otherwise relatively flat surface into which we often comprised our three dimensional world.

Yizhou

A versatile contemporary artist born in Jiangsu Province will be featuring recent bronze sculpture. The simple look of his sculptures takes inspiration from Nature, some of his favorite subjects being birds and lotus flowers. He is an accomplished oil painter, now further exploring creations in three dimensions.

Eleonora Tugues Plaza

Young Venezuelan sculptor. Her main subject is the human body. In her works, the space surrounding the characters is incorporated into the work of art. At the same time they expand into the space and action surrounding them. When she works a piece, she considers where and how it should be placed: they could be hanging from a ceiling, attached to a wall or jumping from it. She has participated in several sculpture contests.

Rolf Bergmeier

German born plastic artist. He refuses to be regarded as a sculptor. He rather uses the term plastic artist. A pioneer of “Oil on Wood” or the plastic art of “three-dimensional painting” with a room-spanning meshwork of black wooden compositions. They are fragments of branches, put together like a woven fabric, covered in black oil paint and defining a geometrical, three-dimensional space which confronts us and opens up for us a different view of the world.

Sang Maolin -guest artist, participating with original wood-blocks.

Printmaker from Shanxi Province, capable of blending into his work the everyday life experience with abstract concepts. His topics are simple at first look, but they have a profound philosophical meaning. You will have the occasion to take a look at the original woodblocks he prepares for his prints.
