Lost 1 by SANG Mao Lin

Through my artwork I can fulfill an interior state of searching answers for one’s life big questions

When I engaged with the Woodblock print during middle school, I made the most serious milestone of my life.
To succeed in this field one needs to build up two strengths: physical endurance –late bed and early rise are a rule and a lifestyle- and an open and ever-seeking mind. I embrace the art of Woodblock print probably because it is the type of art that I feel most deeply. Working hard is something I learned very early in life coming from a poor countryside village and when I see the simple language of carved wood, through dots and lines, a certain wisdom, intellect and quietness arise from my artworks.

In many of his works, against a large background there is a tiny silhouette of a man walking with his head down. His movements are awkward, his manner, somber. There is a certain philosophic vibe. Looking closely, on such a large background, the figure of a man seems so insignificant, but still it keeps walking forward with the determination and stubbornness of an apparition. Its ultimate purpose is no more than that of an ant trying to survive, as unaware of everything except for its unending duty, but to the eyes of the observer we cannot but feel respect.

In my artwork conveys the simple, naked language of the wood and the reserved loneliness difficult to express with words. The work of Sang Maolin take us to a deeper spiritual plane, forcing our thoughts to penetrate into the wide expanse of a cosmos full of limitless dormant life forces, making us feel just like we do every time we gaze into the skies bestrewn in countless stars, realizing how small and insignificant we are, while comprehending the true depth of the human soul.
