Zen of Emptiness by YAN Bing Hui

I believe that the emphasis of the simplicity of ink wash represents the richness of the spirit

To always maintain the vigor of creation, a dedicated artist must make his spiritual or creative world as expansive and deep as the ocean.
I embarked upon the creation of modern Ink wash for the reason that I felt that traditional Chinese painting representing landscape, flowers and birds and human figures were not sufficient to express the passion and restlessness of life instinct in my youth.

Having simultaneously cultivated the calligraphy as a form of art and self-expression, I must admit there is always the force of calligraphy present in my paintings and vice versa. There is a sort of purity and directness contained in some formulae of ink wash. To me, modern art includes the cultivation of both the spirit and the form. If the emphasis is laid only on the form, it may unavoidably lead to emptiness; but the pen and ink, the movement of the brush strokes, the rhythm, pace and space are spirit in themselves.

I am compelled to look for purity and simplicity in my creations. I believe that the emphasis of the simplicity of ink wash can represent the richness of spirit. By limiting the form, I have found a space for a free life, a new synthesis between elevated and abstract concepts with concrete life experiences, an encounter that possesses a symbolic effect as a whole and demonstrate a dialogue of great implications.
