Pan Jianfeng, while highly praised as a young designer, also begins to win recognition in contemporary art scene. This solo exhibition, ranging from video works, porcelain, installation art, makes a gathering of important works which Pan created in recent years and will be a reveal of his inspiration which is full of wit and vigor and his art conception of human concern.
In Pan’s art, he always combines his freewheeling originality with his solid background of traditional Chinese art. The series “Sweating” are the most recent porcelain works produced with traditional porcelain crafts. The edged and deformed or even grotesque shape with thick and colorful black ceramic glaze looks like a kaleidoscope of this world: turbulent, contradictory, dreamy and chaotic, however, the accidentally shining crystal red glaze in the seam represents the energy of life that will last forever. In the water-ink video works (the original ones are traditional Chinese painting), the face faded out of the ink point and water mark, the body moved in the long scrolls of painting revealed the stressed human being’s change in this modern society. It implies a deep meaning and keeps humorous as well. The porcelain works combines the Chinese characters and images describing the 30 years since the opening policy of China with Chairman Mao’s waving gesture, as well as the big mouth cup installation works, recollected the times that people never stopped to get close to the truth, only that those works put on some simplicity and amiability of daily life and reduced the heavy historical reflections.
In this chaotic and contradictory world, cruelty and coldness was everywhere, but as a Chinese ancient poem goes: talking about something warm turns the winter valley into a spring vale, the natural and modest style of Pan Jianfeng shines like a beam of sun in the reality which warms people’s heart.
