China: New B Generation
by 1918 ArtSPACE
Location: 1918 ArtSpace
Artist(s): HUANG He, SONG Yonghua, ZHANG Kexin
Date: 15 May - 15 Jun 2011

Those outstanding people who created Chinese development by their technical knowledge, seem to have all vanished. The only thing left is a transformed society and a tattered and torn environment: full of shallow consumption and excess in a cloud of cigarette smoke, booze, prostitutes and piercing lights that numbs our sense of morality and responsibility.

ZHANG Kexin captures the absurdity of that colorful circus of decadence and turns it into ridicule caricatures; seemingly merely entertaining at first, they slowly reveal their serious thought and intension to trigger contemplation about the society we live in and interact with

HUANG He directs the focus on the inner process, inner disunity, the contradictory self-reflexion and illustrates the self struggle bellow the surface in his monkey faces.

On SONG Yonghua’s canvas emotional landscapes remind us of purity that stands in stark contrast to the excess and inner disunity of humans – it offers an escape from all the self-struggle and pretension.
