Lost Way

"Chitty chitty bang bang!" the outside world is noisy with drivers urging to speed up. It is indeed a busy, wild world where no clear path is present. There are so many rules to follow, possible directions to choose and advices to take. The moment of realization is gone, and only confusion remains. In GONG Xinru's artwork, "the Traffic Tree," the bewildering multiplicity of life is well-portrayed.

The numerous signs immediately remind the viewers of the confusion, contradiction, and congestion within the contemporary society. The signs, which were meant to lead people to the correct destination, end up creating a chaos. "The Traffic Tree" accurately depicts human beings' insecurity and confusion in a metaphoric and symbolic way. Branches of signs endlessly grow out of the trunk along each successive generation. As the society develops, the wisdom of unity and the beauty of simplicity have become obsolete.

The great teachings and guidance are all muddled up together, and blend away one's individuality just as all different colors get mixed up to become black. Without clearly understanding oneself, one feels helplessly lost, and eventually fails to find a way to arrive at the final destination. So why don’t we appreciate the value of freedom a little more as Taoism says, "If you want to nourish a bird, you should let it live any way it chooses" (Chuang-tzu)?
