Paradise Lost
by Feizi Gallery
Location: Feizi Gallery
Artist(s): ZHAO Hua Sen
Date: 12 Mar - 28 Mar 2010

“Paradise Lost”, the picture and installation exhibition by Zhao Huasen, will be launched at Feizi Gallery (55 Fuxing Xi Lu, Xuhui District, Shanghai) on March 12, 2010 at 4:00 p.m. The exhibition will be open through March 28, 2010. Planned by Guan Yuda, the renowned art critic and curator, sponsored by Feizi Gallery, it’s the first solo exhibition of Zhao Huasen, a comprehensive display of his thoughts on art recent years.

With the theme of “Paradise Lost”, the exhibition is based on the biblical prototype of human being’s original sin. Adam and Eve yielded to the temptation of Satan and were thus banished from the Garden of Eden and cursed with hard labor. So God lost man, and man God. The yearning for the Eden became man’s eternal spiritual quest, and the feelings of confusion and disorientation inhabit their hearts. Starting from this angle, the exhibition concerns the sense of bewilderment and perplexity widely spread among modern people. The exhibition consists of three series of pictures, namely “Landscape”, “Drifting” and ”Disorientation” , as well as two installations: “Broken Mirror” and  ”Fragile Superman ”. From different perspectives, these works speak of the pain and reflection that every individual faces in trying to survive. In the series of “Landscape”, through overexposure of images of traditional monuments, modern landmarks and sculptures, the artist weakens their significance of loftiness and authoritativeness; the series of “Drifting ” presents people in an unstable and rootless state of drifting; while “Disorientation” illustrates the post-adolescent helplessness and tendency to avoid reality. “Broken Mirror” expresses the thoughts on and the fight against image-abuse of the internet age. Through his unique voice, Zhao Huasen expresses the sentiments of feeling perplexed and misunderstood that we all once shared. His works also reflect modern people’s bewilderment deep down within and the artist’s contemplation on social issues.
