This exhibition brings together three solo projects of artists who are using the ancient medium of xuan paper in vanguard ways: Qiu Zhijie, You Si and Zheng Chongbin. While each of these artists has long been dedicated to working with this traditional material, they have at the same time also explored their artistic pursuits through other more experimental media and techniques. Qiu Zhijie, one of China’s most versatile and celebrated artists will display installation work along with several towering scrolls in SGA’s atrium space, which recast traditional signifiers in enlightening new ways. Using vivid colors and an unorthodox painting technique that exploits xuan’s ability to absorb water, You Si reinvents Chinese painting’s relationship with natural subject matter. You Si’s signature organic little characters are also manifest in a ceramic forest that parades across the gallery’s floors and ceilings. Zheng Chongbin’s gestural black and white paintings merge the discourse of Western abstract expressionism with the most basic tenets of China’s long ink tradition. At the same time Zheng’s minimalist video work echoes his devotion to Chinese traditional painting.
