As the first not-for-profit funded by a domestic financial institution, Taikang Space (former Taikang Top Space) is founded by Taikang Life Insurance Co.Ltd in 2003. In October 2009, it relocated to Caochangdi Red One District, and renamed as Taikang Space.

Taikang Space’s main manifestos comprise two folds. One is to build a collection with art historical significance for Taikang Life Insurance, a body a work covering representative works in the development of art history from “1942-1976 to the present”. Taikang Life Insurance hopes to build its own museum in the future, through which to provide the viewer a comprehensive development of art in these periods. Two, Taikang Space aims to establish a platform of high academic context. Through its support and funding of practices and exhibitions by creative artists to push forward the development of contemporary in China. It will serve as a research platform that specifically follows case studies of representative artists to reflect shifting trends and development in the contemporary art scene. After our relocation, the new space spans over 500 square meters separated into two major exhibition halls, and expands its manifesto from “to inspire” to “retrospect and inspire” focusing on established and emerging artists. At the same time, we will be showing art projects by established artists in chronicling the development of art history (photographer Wu Yinxian’s project) as well as focusing on young experimental artists in the contemporary art context (our one year program “51Squaremeters”). The works show encompass painting, photography, sculpture, installation, video and among which, our continuous focus on photography reveals our attitude for experimental and explorations on media art.

These two exhibition halls embarking on two different paths will present more spectacular projects reflecting Taikang Space’s reflections and contemplations on the development of Chinese art history, and aims to stimulate creative potentials in artist and furthers academic dialogue on this platform
