AroundSpace Gallery was founded in October 2006 as the heart of the 696 Weihai Lu arts district in downtown Shanghai, where its sprawling space inhabited the former grand hall of a wealthy businessman’s mansion, the office of an auto parts factory foreman, and the shower room for factory workers. The gallery now resides in an Art Deco office building situated along the historic Bund.

AroundSpace Gallery has held nearly 20 exhibitions in the four years since its inauguration and has become an influential gallery in Shanghai. It presented an exhibition of a group of young multi-media artists from Shanghai in June 2007, which attracted immediate attention from local art community. The Gallery has been devoting itself to discovering and promoting contemporary Chinese art, as well as enhancing and deepening the exchange and collaboration between Chinese artists and international art community. The artists that the Gallery represents range from established abstract artists to emerging young sculptor. In 2010, the Gallery curated and held four exhibitions, among which, SHANSHUI: Both Ways, was co-organized by the Pro Helvetica and Swiss Consulate General in Shanghai. The exhibition showcased two Swiss artists and two Chinese artists’ work and was a great success that received high evaluation from everywhere. The Gallery is presently showing artist Han Feng’s solo exhibition. Immersed in the city’s cultural heritage, the Gallery views each exhibit as an opportunity to present the true spirit of contemporary China through the practice of visual art.

AroundSpace Gallery has two spaces: one for the regular exhibitions, and the other for the gallery's special projects. The Gallery also accepts artists’ residency proposals from domestic and international artists. The selected artists work in the gallery with their own projects, which brings dynamic energy and experiments to the gallery.
