Umeå Academy of Fine Arts at Umeå University is beautifully located on the riverside of Umeälven in the centre of the Umeå. The school started in 1987. The well-equipped workshops for wood, metal, plaster, bronze, printmaking, photo, video, sound and computor-based work are open to all students. Every student has a studio space and all  students have two supervisors. Teachers at the school are available as supervisors for all students. Courses, workshops, projects are offered to an extent of at least 40% (24 credits ECTS), which means that the individual studio work including individual tutoring, covers 60% (36 credits ECTS) of the study year.

During their studies at the Academy of Fine Arts, students acquire practical, technical and theoretical competence. They train their abilities for critical analyses of thoughts and ideas in the fields of culture - the contexts the ideas are part of and their backgrounds. The students practice to debate and to write about visual art and other subjects of interest for the visual art. Together with the school's international team of teachers the students investigate the role of art and artists in society - socially, economically and legally. The group of students is an important instrument of criticism and practical selfhelp. Students take an active part in the formation of the school's activities.

The studies prepare the students for profession as artists, in Sweden and internationally, or in other areas where artistic knowledge and research is of importance. The education focuses on the students individual needs and reflects the creative diversity of contemporary Arts practice and the critical discourse surrounding it.

Every year around 12 new students are accepted to the Bachelor Program in Fine Arts Program, (3 years, 180 credits) around 12 to the Master Program in Fine Arts, (2 years, 120 credits). Totally there are about 70 students at the school. The Academy of Fine Arts also give courses in Aesthetics and summer courses for example in Film and Painting.
