Sonic Scenery by Sangwon Nam
Date: 25 Jan - 23 Feb 2014

D Project Space is pleased to introduce the sound artist NAM Sangwon and his solo exhibition NAM Sangwon : Sonic Scenery. By presenting the process of randomly collected noise being transformed into a new form of sound and visual images through digital mechanism, the artist invites the audience to aural and visual symphony generated by an instantaneous combination of coincidental factors.

In this presentation, NAM uses ‘ambient noise’ as a medium to establish an environment, which creates moving images and sound as its output. The sonic elements are captured in microphones and converted into real-time musical composition, and then this newly composed sound is delivered to the audience through speakers. As this sound installation creates a combination of musical compositions that simultaneously interacts with changing images, the exhibition space is filled with comprehensive interactive art. From this process, segmental units of sound floating in the air are transformed into continuous rhythm and expand their territory to emotional and sentimental space.

In the exhibition 'NAM Sangwon : Sonic Scenery,' the artist drastically attempts to change the nature of space with non-aesthetic ingredient, the ‘noise’. He builds a platform for ‘Generative Art’ in the actual exhibition space where the artwork is generated by itself under specific settings, rather than an artwork passively set up to be watched. Through these experiments, the exhibition tries to explore the possibilities of site-specific works being interacted with visitors in the space, rather than focusing on the work itself.

Artist
Born in 1981, Nam is a sound artist and electronic music composer. After he finished his study in Composition at Kyung-Hee University in 2005, he received a professional certificate in Music Technology from the School of Music of Korea National University of Arts in 2010. He visualizes the sound by using it as an ingredient in various areas - electronic music, visual arts, and contemporary dance. This process can be described as ‘Generative Art’ - Nam first creates a ‘systematic’ environment, and then makes consequences occur from it. Recently, he has expanded the spectrum of sound art by collaborating with diverse artists such as musicians, architects, and novelists. And he is already recognized for the popularity and his experimental nature through vigorous activities as a member of ‘TACIT GROUP’ from 2009 to 2011, an internationally renowned media performance group.
