Adjective Life in the Nonsense Factory
Artist(s): YANG Ah Ham
Date: 6 Mar - 25 Apr 2010

The solo exhibition by Yang Ah Ham takes place at Art Sonje Center Seoul from March 6, 2010 through April 25, 2010.

Yang Ah Ham has always been interested in the idea of the individual as the smallest and densest unit of life. In her exhibition 'Adjective Life in the Nonsense Factory', Yang Ah Ham tracks down individuals captured in contemporary life.

Yang Ah Ham has been working in the Netherlands from 2006. Ham also traveled to many areas, including the US and the Middle East, where she obtained specific experiences to produce new works. Notable examples are the video works: ‘Dream… in Life’, ‘Illusions of Memory’ and ‘Transit Life’. Ham does not look over the various regions of the world through the perspective of a tourist, but lives in the destinations for a certain period of time.

These adjectives of life deal with aspects such as emotion, mystery, the image and its seduction, power and security. To give difference yet equality to the presented individuals she chose different medium for each individual that simultaneously exist in the space.

Yang Ah Ham’s works are narrative even if they are not narration.
She has mainly been working in the medium of video, which all exist at the edge of documentary and fiction. In 'Adjective Life in the Nonsense Factory', she took an another step to reach a suspense in narrative, as she shows different fragments in a simultaneous installation formed by various mediums: drawing, sculpture, photography, video and performance.

“Chocolate Head”,” Out of frame”, Yang Ah Ham made an elaborate sculpture of the head of an internationally famous curator with chocolate, and had the dancers do a performance around the chocolate head. It may read Yang Ah Ham’s intentions of sculpting such a head figure and directing the performance as a critique of relations among humans in society, or more specifically, dynamics of human relations occurring in real-time in the international art scene.
