The Boundary of Consciousness
Artist(s): Yu MAN
Date: 20 Mar - 20 Apr 2010

Letter of Recommendation
Man Yu is an “intellectual-type” artist. It can be perceived from his creation that he takes a great interest in the influence of concepts on the “ego in reality”. What is often neglected by others tends to catch his attention. The concept of “boundary” plays a prominent role in his work. The boundaries between the subject and the object, truth and falseness, logic and sensibility, consciousness and sub-consciousness, as well as transcendentalism and realism are one of his favorite topics. The subtleties contained in the subject area attract him to keep on challenging the limits of his thinking. What he attempts to express through his work is that there are a variety of ways to read the reality, and how to establish one’s own way of reading is the most crucial. Although the way he as an artist reads the reality is not necessarily universal, it undoubtedly puts forward something for people interested in this field to think about.
--Jin Feng

Theme
The work explores the boundary of the artist’s consciousness. Concepts such as time, space, mathematics and geometry, as well as personal habits, interests, behavior patterns and thinking modes developed from one’s own life experience are all intricately integrated. It is the imagination of the boundary of consciousness. The work was inspired by the story about a person who tried to find his key lost in a park on the street only because there was light on the street. Several different interpretations can be applied to the story. The arrangement of the site helps to highlight ambiguity of the space. It seems to be an exhibition, but also looks like a studio. At the meantime, it is an aisle to the warehouse. Such a space effectively furthers the theme and integrates uncertain reality, paradoxical thinking and ethical dilemmas together.
