An Origin Point
Artist(s): PAN Xiao Rong
Date: 22 Jan - 1 Mar 2010

Letter of Recommendation
The work of young artist Pan Xiaorong features his unique methodology of penetrating the surface to touch the core. They are somewhere between painting and sculpture, and thus not easy to be categorized. Pan shifts his attention from pigments on paper surface to the fibers inside, trying to explore the finite three-dimensional space within graphic art and conduct a kind of innovative sculpture experiment within the parallel.
The solo exhibition of Pan Xiaorong provides him with an opportunity not only to communicate with, question and express himself in a more visible and direct way, but also to review his emerging art career. Not only does art challenge artists’ intelligence and endurance, but artists also constantly challenge the boundaries of art. Art becomes some kind of “unbearable lightness of being”.

Theme:
The use of knife, ruler and cheap cardboard imbues Pan Xiaorong’s painting works with a kind of consistent logic.

As far as he’s concerned, ruler is a symbol of science, precision and objectivity, and knife, a tool stands for aloofness and emotionlessness. They are not easy to be manipulated and while using them in the creation process, one has to free himself from all kinds of emotions and remain as rational and objective as possible. They enable the artist to deprive art of any meaningful expression and to separate art from life. In the end, art is art and everything else is everything else.
