The Era of Ink Painting—2010 Shanghai New Ink Art Exhibition will be inaugurated at Zhu Qizhan Art Museum at 3:00 pm, on May 15th, 2010,co-organized by Zhu Qizhan Art Museum and Shanghai Duolun Museum of Modern Art. Meanwhile, in order to deepen the academic topics of the exhibition, The Era of Ink Painting forum will be held at Zhu Qizhan Art Museum from 9:30am to 6:30pm, May 16th, 2010, to be moderated by critic Wang Nanming, and attended by a group of authoritative scholars, to name a few, Huang Zhuan, Gao Minglu, Lu Hong, Pi Daojian, Zhu Qingsheng, Lin Mu and Lu Fusheng.

It has been five years since Zhu Qizhan Art Museum and Shanghai Duolun Museum of Modern Art co-founded Shanghai New Ink Painting Base and jointly staged the 1st exhibition under the banner of Harmony of Heaven, Earth, and Man -2005 Shanghai New Ink Art Exhibition in 2005. Over the years, Shanghai New Ink Art Exhibition has evolved from a regional event characterized by ink paintings of Shanghai school to a much wide-ranging contemporary art stage. During the 1st exhibition, Liu Guosong, a Taiwan ink artist with international impact, was one of the initiators. On the 3rd exhibition Ink Painting on the Way in 2007, some overseas Chinese artists with admirable accomplishments were present, for example, Zhao Wuji and Zhu Dequn. Then, on Overseas Ink Art sub-exhibition of Ink Painting Today—2009 Shanghai New Ink Art Exhibition, the participation of overseas Chinese, especially artists living abroad (USA, Canada, South Korea, Japan, etc.), helped to spread the influence of the exhibition globally. On this year’s exhibition, the topic of Modern Art that will be probed into in great details has turned Shanghai New Ink Art Exhibition into an international communication platform of classical and contemporary ink art. With 2010 World Expo around the corner, Zhu Qizhan Art Museum and Shanghai Duolun Museum of Modern Art join hands once again to stage the grant event, The Era of Ink Painting—2010 Shanghai New Ink Art Exhibition, with aim to exhibit the inclusive and broad-minded Shanghai school of art and show the whole world classical and modern ink art of China.

This year’s exhibition is divided into two parts: classic traditional ink paintings exhibited at Zhu Qizhan Art Museum and contemporary ink paintings at Shanghai Duolun Museum of Modern Art. The former is about two themes. One is Trace the Origin·Ink Painting, on which the history of Shanghai school paintings will be revealed with literature and modern calligraphies and paintings, with aim to review and clarify the backdrop for the birth of contemporary New Ink Art. The other theme is Classic Contemporary Ink Paintings, which will set out some new works of Shanghai school, invite representative Chinese artists to join in the exhibition and, in the form of north-south dialogue, reflect the inheritance and innovation of traditional ink paintings. At Duolun museum, three sub-exhibitions will be staged, The Edge of Ink Art, The Other Shore of Ink Art and The Third Category of Abstraction, schemed by Wan Nanming, Jiang Qigu and Man Lin respectively, and moderated by scholar Zhu Qingsheng et al. Ink artists at home and abroad are invited. Through their eyes, the transformation and derivation of traditional ink language in the contemporary art context is unveiled by diverse forms of art, including video and image, installations, so as to manifest how the spirit of traditional culture underlies ink language and is inherited and derived, and also to display the fresh ecology of contemporary ink art as completely as possible.

Zhu Qizhan Art Museum is committed to carrying forward classics, while Duolun Museum of Modern Art focuses on contemporary Chinese art. The two sponsors will divide the exhibition themes to present a brilliant dialogue and match on subject matters related to ink art.

It is reported that the exhibition will last till June 13th, 2010.
