Subjective Reality
Date: 3 Jul - 21 Aug 2010

ARTMIA Foundation is delighted to present Feng Lianghong, Hu Shengping and Yang Liming with their abstract works in the exhibition "Subjective Reality".

Abstract art in Western art history is considered a non-figurative art movement, beginning in the late 19th and early 20th century and starting as the search by artists to find new means of expressing themselves in art - by abandoning realistic depictions and relying on the power of form and color.

However, abstraction is not an invention of the 20th century. In Chinese art, the Chinese character and calligraphy are a prominent form of abstraction that goes back in time far before the West considered abstract art. In abstraction is embedded a certain kind of reflection of reality and of letting go, with a meditative quality. Just as the calligrapher meditatively allows the brush to form the characters on the rice paper, the contemporary abstract artist gives way to the artwork to be created by him.

This exhibition wants to explore the relationship between abstraction and reality, and the deep roots those three artists have in oriental philosophy and art. It wants to show the contemporary and highly innovative results they found to express themselves.

Feng Lianghong's clear and cool abstract paintings open like a window onto a strange yet familiar meditative landscape that draws the beholder's view into the depth of its own reality. The artist clears his mind through meditation while painting his works, thus allowing the painting a life of its own that is guided by his artistic expertise.

Hu Shengping's works are an exceptional continuation of traditional Chinese art on paper. He creates his own paper, which becomes an integral part of the work of art. The organic structure of the material resembles tree bark, animal skin - the organic signs of life found in the smallest of life forms, at the same time resembling an overall picture of the earth as seen from space.

Yang Liming creates his hypnotic monochrome meditative works while listening to music and he communicates the meditative powers of music and art. A powerful pull created by layers of monochrome paint and abbreviated brush strokes draws the beholder into a universe created by the artist.

All three artists are deeply rooted in oriental philosophy and meditation as well as in traditional Asian art, at the same time exploring contemporary abstract art. The result is a meditational abstract art that opens a gateway to an individual world, to their own subjective reality.
