In 1981, Bobby Sands, a young Irish Republican Army member, went on a hunger strike to protest the British government's refusal to recognise him and his fellow IRA inmates as political prisoners. Featuring an intensely committed performance by Michael Fassbender, this film balances formal control and socio-political urgency with horror and brutality. Winner of the Camera d'Or at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival, Hunger is British artist Steve McQueen's first feature film.
The son of working-class immigrants from Trinidad and Grenada, McQueen studied painting at London's Chelsea College of Art and Design, and film at Goldsmiths College. He is known for his minimalist and experimental moving image installations, which have been exhibited internationally. In 1999, McQueen won the Turner Prize and in 2009, he represented Britain at the Venice Biennale. He was also named one of Britain's "official war artists" in 2003. He is working on his second feature film, Shame.
