Artists in the Neighbourhood Scheme V : Still Lifes and Waves
Artist(s): Ivy MA
Date: 4 Jun - 3 Jul 2011

A fascinating film or novel holds a kind of power to draw us into its imaginary world, causing us to forget about reality. It is not only the plot and characters, but also the details of these classic films and novels, like flowers, plants, backgrounds, objects and their embodied symbolism lead visual artist Ivy Ma to reminisce. All these stimulated her to create a series of visual art works inspired by classic films of Fei Mu, Yasujiro Ozu, Yoshimitsu Morita and novel of Virginia Woolf, leading the viewers to appreciate these works from another perspective.

Ivy abstracts her favourite scenes from the films of these masters, and re-interprets some of the items in her unique visual language. These items include the lily from And Then (1985), the orchard from Spring in a Small Town (1948), and the plants from Tokyo Story (1953), which together create the scenery of this exhibition. From printing to sketching and animation, Ivy conducts her visual experiments through different artistic media. Another series of exhibits is inspired by Virginia Woolf's novel, The Waves (1931). Ivy has rearranged the found objects that she picked from the seaside, adding photos, immersing the audience in the inner landscape of the novel.
