Postcards From Vegas
Artist(s): Rob CARTER, Nick CARTER
Date: 17 Nov - 11 Dec 2011

The Cat Street Gallery is proud to present Postcards from Las Vegas, the second exhibition at the gallery for the London based artistic duo Rob and Nick Carter. The Space will be transformed by their latest series of vibrant artworks which marry vintage postcards and intriguing neon signs. The artists both collected postcards throughout their childhood and have monumentalised their favourite offbeat and nostalgic images. These are juxtaposed with retro looking Las Vegas neon signs that originally belonged to motels, strip clubs, casinos and diners. The results are surprising; far from jarring or garish, the sculptural artworks are mesmerizingly beautiful. They speak powerfully of past eras whilst simultaneously presenting a highly original and contemporary aesthetic.

The neon works were shown to great critical and commercial success in January of this year at The Fine Arts Society, London. For this Hong Kong exhibition, the Carters have expanded the series to include Asian postcards, such as vintage views of Victoria Harbour or The Bund in Shanghai.

Postcards from Las Vegas demonstrates the latest departure for the artists, a married couple who have worked together for over fifteen years. Their work is centred on the possibilities of light, colour and form and has taken many mediums including paperless photography, painting, installation, neon and film. Their work is in the permanent collections at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London and they have shown twice at The Museum of Neon Art in L.A. as well as exhibiting internationally in New York, Geneva, Milan and London. They have been shortlisted for the Sovereign Art Prize and high profile collectors of their work include Sir Elton John, Kevin Spacey, Jude Law and Matthew Williamson.
