Frozen Moments, Hidden Spaces: Jon Nibbe Ceramic Solo Exhibition
Artist(s): Jon NIBBE
Date: 1 Jul - 21 Aug 2011

If you stand still long enough, it is possible to see how fast the world is flowing. The pace of life becomes overwhelming with everyone and everything striving to become faster, more efficient, and connected. Often, this comes at the cost of basic human interaction. Instead of going to an opera you can download the performance to your iPod while cruising the freeway in your Lexus Hybrid. Nowadays it seems that everything is streamlined and scheduled with little left to chance. It is for this reason I tend to indulge in the opposite end of the spectrum, with the simplest example being a preference for walking. I find it easier to notice little intricacies of my environment while travelling step by step.

These hidden spaces could be searched for, but are far more gratifying when they find you. These spaces speak to me, within them rests a world amongst a world. These spaces are truly humbling, in that way, they hold a preciousness not found in anything bought or sold. The beauty is while discovering the nature of the space before me I feel small when set against the surrounding world. I am often alone when I see these spaces and am very aware of the value of shared experience. For this reason I associate the relationship between the hidden spaces and the landscapes which contain them with the interaction between two individuals.

My compositions present the viewer with riddles rather than statements. Sensual landscapes with surfaces designed to draw the viewer close, depending upon an inherent desire to touch it. This desire affords an opportunity to discover the hidden spaces held within the form. These discoveries will be a gift to those individuals who are willing to slow down and really look at what is being offered to them. It is my deepest hope that anyone who comes away from these works with a deeper appreciation for the world around them.
