Creatures of Intention: A Solo Exhibition of YANG, Chien-yi
Artist(s): Chien-Yi YANG
Date: 24 Feb - 25 Mar 2012

Those insects detrimental to human efforts are called “pests.” How about those humans who are detrimental to nature?
Taiwan is a major producer of fresh fruits, some indigenous and others introduced. To satisfy the demands of the consumers, they have been modified and mass-produced. They have adapted to the local climate and helped us to gain the moniker of the “Kingdoms of Fruits.”
Whether indigenous or introduced, insects which consume fruits are eliminated if they do not serve the goals of humans.
Evolution has produced mutants and hybrids, some of which could not survive due to a lack of fitness. Others were thought of as miraculous creatures by those who did not know better. They were preserved or even bred by humans.
Is this due to the difference in treatment or the survival of the fittest? Did they come about because of the decisions of humans or the laws of nature?
These ceramic works are about Taiwanese animals. They de-emphasize the battles between humans and their environment…
