Have you been to a spectacular exhibition with a hundred mosaics? The Ceramics Department of the Yingge Vocational High School’s Class of 2011 has chosen mosaics to be the theme of their graduation exhibition and to demonstrate what they have learned in these past three years.
The students sketched out plans for their imaginative concepts and adapted them to patterns suitable for mosaics. After sorting out the colors and arrangements, the mosaic pieces were fired in the kiln and then assembled to create eye-catching works.
Each student has a different creative process. The topics range from contemporary environmental concerns such as global warming and carbon offset, to philosophy, music, flowers and landscapes. There are also works based on composition and color theories. They were not made like how people typically imagine mosaics are made. Ceramic parts were sculpted and adhered together to form reliefs. Furthermore, mosaic pieces of different sizes and shapes were arranged in a way that shows color gradients. The glue between the pieces was colored as well. Special shapes were fired in the kiln. Larger pieces of mosaic were painted than smashed to obtain graceful shapes and natural edges. Each piece is different.
These diverse and splendid ceramic mosaics await you to stop by on a sunny afternoon.
