Traditional into Contemporary—Masterpieces from the Great Contemporary Chinese Painters
Date: 5 Dec 2009 - 24 Jan 2010

“Traditional into Contemporary – Masterpieces from the Great Contemporary Chinese Painters,” organized by Xizhitang, is one of the finest exhibitions on the 20th century Chinese painting. As for the scale, structure and content of the exhibition, it surpasses previous exhibitions in depth and its excellence and completeness is rarely seen. In the end of the Qing Dynasty and early republican years, the debates about the old and new thoughts and theories of Chinese paintings had created the diverse modes and styles of representations and the emergence of great artists. This exhibition, reflecting the elegance and brilliance of the diverse 20th century paintings, gives the best presentation and interpretation of that period. This time, Xizhitang carefully selected nearly 120 art pieces of 64 infuential artists in the history of Chinese fine arts in the 20th century, including Wu Changshuo, Qi Baishi, Huang Binhong, Gao Qifeng, Wu Hufan, Xu Beihong, Huang Junbi, Zhang Daqian, Lin Fengmian, Fu Baoshi, Li Keran and Lu Yanshao.

For the history of Chinese paintings, the ever-changing 20th century was a special environment and transition between integrating Chinese and the Western art and confronting the conflicts between the tradition and the modernity. This exhibtion, featuring art pieces selected from the personal valuable collection of contemporary representatives at home and from abroad with diverse themes and varied styles, has a great significance. Xizhitang aims at depicting the features of 20th century Chinese painting through limited exhibits.
