Made in Britain: Contemporary Art from the British Council Collection 1980–2010
Date: 30 Jun - 9 Oct 2011

From the late 1980s to the early years of the 21st century, Britain experienced dramatic changes in its social, political and cultural life that had a deep and transformative impact on the development of British art. Gifted with an acute sensitivity and empathy for social issues, contemporary artists created works that depicted the changing faces of British society in this shifting climate.

Co-organised by the British Council and the Hong Kong Heritage Museum, the third leg of the touring exhibition 'Made in Britain: Contemporary Art from the British Council Collection 1980–2010' showcases works by 35 groups of British artists mainly produced in the period between 1990 and 2010. Centre stage is taken by the controversial Young British Artists group that includes Damien Hirst, Sarah Lucas, Gillian Wearing and Mark Wallinger. Noted for their shock tactics, the core of these emerging YBAs, many of them art school graduates, benefited from intense media coverage and marketing hype and quickly rose to stardom, achieving celebrity status and exerting an influence on British art that will be felt for decades to come. Also featuring works by Turner Prize winners such as Richard Wright and Wolfgang Tillmans as well as several nominees, the show that has been created encompasses an enormous diversity of styles and conceptions.

Presenting an amazing selection of some of the most iconic works of contemporary British art, the exhibition allows the viewer to read these powerful statements of art and gain an insight into a contemporary culture that is uniquely British.
