Photographs by Alon Garty
by Culture Club Gallery
Location: Culture Club
Artist(s): Alon GARTY
Date: 9 Jul - 21 Jul 2012

Born in Tel Aviv in 1980, Alon was raised in Israel, Italy and France. After working in Belgium for several years, Hong Kong came knocking on his door in 2008.

Alon’s passion for photography began in 2001 during his first visit to South East Asia. There he fell in love with the images that could only ever be captured in that fleeting moment when the camera clicked. Since then, Alon’s wanderlust has taken him as far as West Africa, South America, Europe, Nepal and China, among other places. Apart from documenting his travels in photographs, Alon has also written about Fiji, India, Hong Kong and Ivory Coast for the Israeli travel magazine "Masa Olami" and a Norwegian magazine called “360”.

Having had multiple exhibitions in many locations including Israel, Belgium and Hong Kong, Alon appreciates the full dimensions of the reality around him by experimenting with colours, lighting and composition in his pictures. Above all, his photography is guided by the Chinese proverb “The journey is the reward”, as Alon seeks the joy of new discoveries. It is the experience that counts.

Hong Kong may be one of the most photographed cities in the world but Alon has found his own unique angles to savour this visual feast. He knows how to juxtapose the glorious contrasts of the land: the young mingled with the old; traditional markets and the pillars of high finance linked by a stone’s throw; cluttered crevices of the urban crush open up to lush, turquoise coves. Alon’s rich collection of photographs takes you on a whirlwind tour of Hong Kong through the transmits the kinetic energy and the thrills of city life. While so much vies for his camera’s attention, Alon finds beauty in both the mundane and the sublime. The result is a very successful tapestry of personal pictures. This is a fine tribute to the Hong Kong that he loves. Alon developed a unique style, which is conveyed and can be seen in all of his current work.

Alon’s rich collection of photographs takes you on a whirlwind tour of Hong Kong. Some of Hong Kong’s most familiar buildings, scenarios and personalities are embraced in these images, but in a personal way that is unique to this photographer. They are a tribute to the Hong Kong he loves.
