Entitled City of Dreams the exhibition presents four Georgian artists, all living and working in Tbilisi: Keti Shalamberidze (b. 1960) executes her unique mono-type and watercolour paintings with rhythmically interchanging line and colour; Lela Geleishvili (b. 1962) paints brightly coloured oils capturing the vibrancy of Georgian culture, the people and the country; David Silagadze (b. 1986) creates imaginary city- and landscapes, often using a single colour-scheme to heighten emotions; Khakaber Tatishvili (b. 1964) produces architectural studies of an idealized, theatrical space, influenced by his early career as a set designer for the Tbilisi State Philharmonics.
Quintana said were introduced to Georgian painting by chance last year, and during our subsequent visits to Tbilisi have discovered an art scene that is not just surviving in the face of the difficulties being faced by the country, but truly vibrant. Although Georgian monumental painting dates back centuries, it was the 20th century that marked the beginning of easel painting, and a new language of artistic expression. Oc-Eo Art are very excited to profile some of the artists we have met. Their work has a distinctive and unique identity - neither Asian nor European, but very specifically "Georgian"?
Launched in October 2006 by Peter Quintana, Oc-Eo Art has rapidly become a leading specialist in contemporary fine art from Asia, introducing work by both established and emerging artists. Oc-Eo Art regularly exhibits in London, Bath and Harrogate, and has permanent exhibition space at Oc-Eo Gallery, 85 Canonbury Road, London N1 2DG.
