Impression of Europe (2002) by KE Shi Zhong
20F
Oil on canvas

Living in current society, especially for the general public, “art” is doubtlessly with a great metaphysic nature. The distinguishing line between the art and the non-art is usually depends an “artist’s” social status, to determine whether he/she is performing art. Meanwhile, due to individual differences on consciousness and beliefs, even two works with same creation styles can still be classified into different levels. Due to such subjective appreciation on art, I realize the importance of an artist’s self-identity and the visual conceptions.
After contemplating all different issues regarding painting creation, I figure three characteristics based on the interaction between my own conception and actual artworks:

1.) The absolute aesthetic pursue of the shape and the color

“Shape” and “color” are usually viewed as two separate visual concepts. However, I include both as two inseparable items in my paintings, as they are interdependent and can both contribute to the integration of shapes and colors. Combining both concepts is currently my main method for painting. Often times when I need a line or an area, it is not simply black and white; instead, it is full of colorful compositions of different lines and areas. I usually make subjective judgments among them. For instance, when I need some red elements on my painting, I visualize different red lines, triangles, or circles.

2.) The destruction of the original and the reconstruction of the new shapes

“Destruction” plays a key role in my creation process. After all, if there is no strong intention to create, there is no need to destroy the original concepts. In other words, if there is not internal longing to express the desire for new orders, there is no meaningfulness to reconstruct the composition.

3.) The “game” and the “correction”

Painting is as interesting as playing a game. I have played such game since I was very young, and I have never felt tired of it for more than 20 years. Besides, I have continuously corrected my methods along with the gaming process, and such correction gives me a certain level of challenge (of course, this challenge is in terms of the technical aspect under the process). However, I eventually realize that such correction process itself, combining with my hobby of stopping creating when it reaches perfection, has influenced me psychologically.

As the matter of fact, an art work is a reflection of our life qualities. The main thing that creators and appreciators care is not the superficial meaning that a completed work reflects at the first glance, instead, they are looking for the process in which the creator delicately tries to present a work resonating audiences’ appreciation.
