Daydream Voyage
by Modern Art Gallery
Location: Modern Art Gallery
Artist(s): YANG Din
Date: 23 May - 23 Jun 2009

What is the beauty of life? Artist based in France, Yang Din has no intention to seek it. But in his works, are vast spaces, secluded atmospheres, upright trees and tiny streams. All these motifs represent the beauty of Nature in Yang’s vision. This reminds us the essence of classic Chinese literati painting, everything in the painting is in the most simplistic form and with deep meanings.

Yang always use simplistic but elegant composition to express a sense of greatness and vastness that gives the painting a zen-metaphor. The softness and textures of colours in his painting tell a story of oriental philosophy. It may look empty but able to have a capacity of greatness. Meanwhile it also carries western philosopher’s way of thinking.  The simplicity is what makes Yang’s painting so interesting, his painting is an excellent example of combining characters of east and west. To return to the purist essence, there’s no distance between the viewer and the works, it is a freedom that allows the viewers to be able to experience the wander of the travelling son, to hear the bird singing and to smell the moist grass in the field.

Yang documents his memories by travelling, he describe that his painting is like to make the abstract dreamland come true. His strokes are full of confidence. He expresses the illusive innocent dreams with pale light and shadows in his painting. Although he keeps repeating his subjects and motifs, but it never looks old. He keeps seeking and searching the fresh feeling which each is like a just blossoming flower in his painting.

It is not accurate to describe Yang’s creation with the term “dreamland”. So-called “dreamland” is essence of false that is always too beautiful to dream on. But Yang doesn’t just want to make the illusion in his mind come true, instead he tells pleasingly and impressively with truth. There is nothing fancy, but true beauty of nature.

He uses the soft colours and demonstrates a most powerful expression. The simple and pure colour touches people’s minds directly. The piled textures and strokes create various levels. In his painting, even a little bird would have a broad sky to fly. A flower can represent a world, a grain of sand can represent a paradise, a simplistic space is the endless beauty and thinking. Yang’s creating life is like the vitality represented by the tiny object.

Daydream Voyage is the exhibition to represent Yang’s fullthinking. It starts from his consistent painting language. Artist chases no trends, he mantians to be himself facing the tremendous waves of contemporary art world. And this is also the classics that Modern Art Gallery wants to promote. The twisted tree can also stand upright and boldly on the ground, the isolated tiny house and lonely bird on the branch can also be self-prideful. Artist has lifted his painting creation from the material world to the spiritual state.

This is Yang’s third exhibitions at Modern Art Gallery. His recent works are more mature and keep evolving. We hope the audiences would be able to slow down for a while in their speedy life pace and enjoy the beauty of Nature and life with us. We sincerely invite all our friends to come together to experience the inner peace and harmony with artist Yang Din.
