Untitled (1957) by CHU Teh Chun
70 x 90 cm
Print on paper

Chu was well trained in Chinese painting early on in his life and was at the same time inclined towards Chinese prose and poetry. This cultural provenance can be clearly discerned in his oil paintings. His non-figurative works reflect a strong influence from calligraphy and are rendered with great musical harmony and rhythm. Through rapidly executed lines and robust brushstrokes, which combine to form a style that is exaggerated and at the same time lyrical, Chu portrays the mystical beauty and dramatic appeal of natural landscapes, gushing rivers and deep ravines. In effect, his works allow the beholder a sense of vivid visual perception that inspires a boundless sense of imagination. His paintings combine the essence of Chinese aesthetics handed down through generations with abstract painting concepts derived from the West. Simplified pictorial elements, smooth flowing lines and bold color schemes together create strong aesthetic impact and endless visual tension.
