Circle and the Square
by NN Gallery
Location: NN Gallery
Artist(s): NG Foo Cheong
Date: 10 Oct - 7 Nov 2009

NN Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Malaysian abstract artist Ng Foo Cheong entitled “Circle and the Square” from 10th October until 7th November 2009. The exhibition will feature his latest works using a combination of plaster of Paris and acrylics on canvas.

Ng Foo Cheong’s new works sees the  use of making emblems of decorative motifs found in Asian cultures to celebrate and make iconic its inherent cross-cultural , religious, spiritual meaning and significance. The theme Circle and the Square is based upon an ancient Taoist riddle on Geometry and is derived from a complex understanding of proportion and the principal of design that Heaven is a circle and the World is square that speak of Emptiness and Form, the Spirit and Matter.

Ng Foo Cheong, in his travels around Asia, has drawn upon the mysteries that surround balance in classical Chinese design and proportion in buildings and its relationship and influence on neighbouring countries. He taps upon the shapes, patterns, designs and architectural forms that reoccur to create a personal translation of symbolic readings of designs we see daily.

His technique of applying plaster first onto canvas before paint creates an added perspective and dimension, lifting colours intentionally as well as allowing for accidental occurance of painstaking and multiple layering process of applying paint onto canvas. His mastery of this technique allows the viewer to appreciate the many tones and qualities of a singular colour, that resonate in the multiple meanings of his emblems.

The new series is dominated by the colour red for its auspicious connotations. As paintings the works present a striking focus and richness, assuming a jewel-like effect that allows for contemplation and meditation.

The exhibition will also present a series of large scale Tangkas inspired by his impressions of Tibet.
