Mission Statement

The new name ARNDT signals a change and decisive step forward in Matthias Arndt’s 20-year career as a gallerist and cultural entrepreneur.

The core programme of ARNDT will represent the essence of 15 years’ experience with Arndt & Partner, and continue the quest to identify the defining positions in contemporary art. The programme brings together leading artists of international repute.

In its exhibition space, ARNDT will focus on its core programme, also presenting thematic exhibitions, projects and premieres of up-and-coming talents as well as internationally established artists. ARNDT will also design and develop curatorial projects in the commercial and institutional sector and at other less conventional venues. Further, ARNDT will incorporate productions and works of various associated artists into specific projects.

Beyond the regular activities of a contemporary art gallery, Matthias Arndt will act as an independent expert to individual artists, museums, private and corporate collections. With ARNDT, he will expand on this experience by developing a range of extended services tailored to clients’ individual needs and interests.

Arndt & Partner

In 1994, Arndt & Partner became the first commercial gallery with West German roots in Berlin Mitte. Matthias Arndt proceeded to build Arndt & Partner into a successful business and an internationally renowned gallery with branches in Berlin and Zurich as well as representatives in Beijing and New York.

Many internationally acclaimed artists had their first solo gallery exhibitions in Berlin or even in all of Germany at Arndt & Partner. These included: Sophie Calle, Thomas Hirschhorn and Nedko Solakov (1995), Muntean/Rosenblum (2004), Julian Rosefeldt (2006), Erik Bulatov, Vik Muniz and Jonas Burgert (2008), and Gilbert & George (2009).

The artists Yayoi Kusama (2006), Jules de Balincourt (2006), Rachel Harrison (2004 and 2007), Claude Lévêque (2002) and Bjarne Melgaard (1998) also had their first Berlin shows at Arndt & Partner.

Arndt & Partner also presented a number of monographic shows and thematic group exhibitions, such as “The Aggression of Beauty” (1996), “Storytellers” (1997), “Habitat” (2004) and “Sweet Bird of Youth” (2007, curated by Hedi Slimane), featuring the work of artists such as Christian Boltanski, Louise Bourgeois, Rafal Bujnowski, Wim Delvoye, Tracey Emin, Günter Fruhtrunk, Ilya und Emilia Kabakov, Johannes Kahrs, Paul McCarthy, Yan Pei-Ming, Anselm Reyle, Ugo Rondinone, Lawrence Weiner and Gillian Wearing.

By December 2009, Arndt & Partner will have been responsible for 200 solo and group shows plus 70 international art fair participations, including Art Basel, Art Basel Miami Beach, Frieze Art Fair, The Armory Show, FIAC, ARCO and ART HK.
