TWO X TWO
by hpgrp Gallery New York
Location: hpgrp Gallery New York
Date: 21 Oct - 30 Dec 2010

Clay as “expression” is what connects the diverse and bold selection of ceramic works in the exhibition. Works that are sculptural as well as vessel oriented and by artists who emanate from many geographical and cultural origins. In addition to representing various regions of the United States, artists featured in the show come from Korea, China, Bulgaria and Greece. TWO X TWO exposes and promotes the advantage of being able to view and compare more than one work by an artist. It shows a range of devices, themes and subject matters an artist might cover in his oeuvre and allows the viewer to better appreciate any artist’s theme, style or period. The exhibition seeks to enhance the understanding of each artist’s work while exploring which qualities stand out. Is there for instance a consistent continuity in the works of any artist over various periods of production or rather abrupt changes? Are there such things as pairs? Are there benefits for featuring a pair from distinctive categories, a wall mount against a pedestal piece or a vase next to a plate or a figure next to an abstract tile or mosaic? The presentation ultimately questions whether an artist can easily be identified by a steady focus on a single theme or aesthetic form, size, shape or narrative.

Included in this exhibition are works by Gordon Baldwin, Charles Birnbaum, Veronica Juyoun Byun, David Furman, Margie Hughto, Sylvia Nagy, Otto Natzler, Shin Sang Ho, Robert Sperry, Rouska Valkova, Peter Voulkos, Patti Warashina, Yiannes and Zhu Legeng.

This exhibition is organized in collaboration with Loveed Fine Arts.
