Philosophy of Art

Open the newspaper. Countless incidents and accidents, overflowing information and people, differeing opinions and conflicts. A constant stream of wordly affairs spills from the paper. Someone’s unforgettable pain is merely the light gossip of another. Someone’s joy is the misery of another. Hurt by others unknown to me, I, too, unknowingly hurt others. With some effort, I look away, brush it off, or pass by unaware.

Emotions too acute to dismiss often become unwieldy. Even if it cannot be felt, I draw out the good in carrying this pain, deep in thought. I am sometimes cold-hearted and indifferent, as dull as a fool. Tomorrow, other stories will spill from the paper. Today will become yesterday and be forgotten.

The one-cent coin glimmers bright. How long it has been in my purse, or from whom it was received, I do not know. It rolls around uselessly and disappears. Its disappearance goes unnoticed.

Beneath the cake lies a pretty white doily. A flawless, beautiful, sing-use doily. Such dismissible splendour and purity, ill-matched with a disposable fate, are pitiable and sad.

Part without knowing if it’s the last tiem, meet without knowing who the other is. Glimmers bright without knowing it’s a one cent coin. Speaks of tomorrow without knowing it dies today. I am a common disposable, a small, trivial one cent coin, a newspaper read once and tossed.
