Portraits of Women
by Catherine Schubert Fine Art
Location: Catherine Schubert Fine Art Gallery
Artist(s): CĂ©line CHARIOT
Date: 7 Oct - 15 Nov 2009

Céline Chariot is a young photographer, born August 23, 1984, in Brussels. She studied at the Fine Arts Academy of Saint Luc, in Liège, and since graduation has participated in many exhibitions in Europe. She comments on this series:

“I started the "Women" series in 2007. What I try to show in this work is the way the woman represents herself in her own universe, without any kind of stage-setting, just as she wants to portray herself.

Each portrait was taken at the model's home, and the model was given the choice of the room she wanted to be photographed in.

I personally try to interfere as little as possible in the shooting.

It is, for me, a way to contradict the saying "Just be beautiful and keep your mouth shut". As a woman, I have to confront this every day - in the media, in fashion, in advertising, in the way people look at each other.

This is the origin of my project: a freeze frame, an instant, a moment to stop and think, to assert "this is who I am". My aim here is to assemble portraits of women who, through the photos, come to light each in their own specific way. This portrayal can be compared to a documentary.”
