According to the ancient prophecy of the Mayan Long Count Calendar, human civilisation will end on 21st December 2012; many similar prophecies identify 2012 as the end of the world, whereby the Earth will be destroyed and everything perish. In point of fact, the Mayans just believed that 21st December 2012 marks the end of the world in its current form, and that human beings will embark upon a whole new period after 2012. A monk once predicted that after 2012 human civilisation will understand that at the forefront of science and technology stands a spirituality unrelated to material physics and chemistry; art is a form of mental and spiritual sublimation, a combination of body and soul, and it is also a language through which humans may express their ardent love of life. Thus, art will witness a new life, a new development. As a small town of integrated Chinese and Western cultures, Macao will also enjoy a better tomorrow. AFA is pleased to collaborate with MGM MACAU on such a special occasion to conduct a comprehensive and thoughtful exhibition of the Macao arts. Discovery – A Creative Journey Through The Works of 20 Macau Contemporary Artists @ MGM MACAU assembles an artistic feast of 40 old and new works by 20 local artists, including oil paintings, watercolours, sculptures, photographs and installations. Some of the artists carefully created for this exhibition, while some earnestly selected suitable exhibits from past works. For those constantly in pursuit of art, this exhibition is both summary and reflection, introducing a new art scene in the new era following 2012.
