Art for Survival

Date: 4 Dec 2010 - 2 Jan 2011

Although Hong Kong does not officially have any “high land price policy,” the government does try many different ways to maintain the high land prices.  For visual artists who are in need of space for exhibitions, their effort devoted into the rent for exhibition venues is by no means less than their effort for art-making.

“Art Together,” with members: Peggy Chan, Martin Cheung, Edwood Yung, Clara Cheung, Gum Cheng, has organized various art activities in different spaces in Hong Kong, including shopping malls, schools, alternative art spaces and housing estates etc.  The art pieces being shown in the current project is a critical response to the influences of the high land prices.  Learning from hawkers on streets, who always go against the expensive rent and are as flexible as possible, the artists from “Art Together” have made a series of mobile art-carts to respond to various social problems in Hong Kong.  Besides pushing and showing the art-carts on Hong Kong streets, the artists also will push the carts to Macau, where the people are also facing a rapid rise in real estate prices and the artists also find it difficult to develop their careers.  As an attempt to “survive” tactically and positively, the artists from “Art Together” will push their art-carts to the famous A-Ma Temple and pray for their future career.    Afterwards, the four mobile art-carts will be exhibited along with photo and video documentations.

The current activity is a very active gesture of the artists to go into the crowd, and to interact with the public with their art.  In fact, this is what contemporary art needs.  Mobility and flexibility are the major characteristics of this art event.  It is also because of these characteristics that the artists can minimize the restrictions of exhibition venues. To further develop this project, “Art Together” will try to host more art exhibits and art education programs with these two characteristics.

Besides offering social groups with limited resources more opportunities to enjoy art, promoting the idea of mobile art-cart also is an artistic and critical response to the social problems caused by the high land prices.

This series of mobile art-carts reveal the strong autonomy of the artists, which also is a notion embraced by the Oxwarehouse.  We have investigated different possibilities to “exhibit” and to “express” in contemporary art, and are very glad to have this chance to collaborate with Oxwarehouse in Macau for a stronger connection amongst the cultural organizations within the Pearl River Delta.
