The notion of ‘freedom’ can trigger in us lots of imaginations and echoes, or maybe just illusions that seemingly haunt our daily lives. The concept of free individual travel isn’t something unique to contemporary people as the ancient troubadours were indeed pioneers who knew already very well its true meaning.
In recent years, the trend of free individual travel has become widely popular, while at the same time gradually generating extremes of behavior, straying from its originally positive and subjective nature. (As a tourist destination favored by China’s Individual Visit Scheme policy) Macao SAR experiences vividly this phenomenon, as its policies have been changing local social forms and people’s lifestyle imperceptibly.
In mainland China, free individual travel, or Individual Visit Scheme, is understood as a government policy. Though it is interpreted differently by each region, universally it should be more a lifestyle than a political issue.
