CHUN Wai biography | artworks | events

Hong Kong-born Chun Wai studied art in France. While adopting contemporary Western artistic styles to present traditional Eastern aesthetic concepts, he obtained a Master’s degree, Diplôme National Supérieur d'Expression Plastique (DNSEP), from the French Ministry for Culture, and then opened an art studio in France.

Shocked by the June 4th 1989 events in Beijing and wary of the Hong Kong handover in 1997, Chun Wai changed his life goal, dropped his original creative plan and embarked on a new career by working as a frontline photojournalist. In 1995, he started his photographic project with a 6x6 medium format camera, and has since been carrying his photo equipment across Asia to document what’s happening. Chun Wai’s photos generally present our ever-changing world from a humanitarian perspective. He focuses his lens on poverty in various regions across different cultural and economic backdrops, on victims of war, and on the challenges presented by climate change to human survival. In brief, Chun Wai uses his profoundly moving photographic language to assemble a collection of epic images that explore human issues.

Chun Wai is now a lecturer of an advanced photography course at the HKU School of Professional and Continuing Education. In 2011, he established Health in Action, a Hong Kong-based non-profit organization dedicated to providing humanitarian aid to countries in Asia.
