Though he was educated as a lawyer, Buu Chi (b. 1948) loved drawing since he was a boy. As a university student, angered by the terrible destruction of war, he joined the student peace movement, and as a result of his activities, he was arrested and imprisoned by the South Vietnamese government. With materials smuggled to him by friends, Buu Chi began to draw his emotional responses to his difficult situation. These drawings were later used in the peace movement.
Today, with short, layered brushstrokes, he creates textured images that are sometimes sad, sometimes humorous. Fully aware of the good and the bad of life, he paints the human condition as he sees it.
