Artist(s): CHEN Junde
Date: 11 Dec - 28 Dec 2010

Chen Junde was born in 1937 in Zhejiang province, China. In 1960, Chen graduated from the Shanghai Academy of Performing Arts where he currently holds a full professorship. A protégé of such famous artists as the legendary Lin Fengmian, Liu Haisu, Yan Wenliang and Guan Liang, Chen Junde's work is strongly influenced by Western Fauvism. He effectively blends the Fauvist focus on strong colours with the expressionism of oriental art to create images that are at once bold and poetic in colour and composition.Chen Junde has held many successful solo exhibitions in Hong Kong, Japan, France, United States, Singapore and Malaysia and is a frequent jurist for major national-level art expositions in China. There are numerous publications of Chen Junde's work and his paintings have been collected by museums in the United States, China, Singapore, and Indonesia, as well as institutions such as the Shaw Brothers Foundation and Malaysia’s Soka Foundation. He is currently President of the Shanghai Oil Painting Association.

In the finest tradition of Picasso or Matisse, Chen Junde’s sketches breathe life onto paper with simple bold lines. He uses different medium – pencil, charcoal and fountain pen – as a means to capture his immediate sensation. His sketches carry the signature flamboyant style typical of his oil paintings. ”When it comes to drawing, nothing is better than the first sketch” (Pablo Picasso)
