Born in Colchester, England in 1963, Baines’ immigrated to Australia and at the age of eight his family moved to the coastal suburb of Grange, where the beach became not only a major part of his life but a heavy influence in his art work.
From an early age Baines exhibited a great deal of artistic talent. After a period of employment producing window displays for a retailer Baines was accepted into the South Australian School Of Art. Despite his vast talent Baines pulled out of formal education. He strongly believes that “...art is about bringing out an inner naivety which could only be developed on your own” and views his work as not only a physical object made of paint and canvas, but more importantly physical evidence of the creative process of the human mind, which cannot be taught through formal education.
During his twenties Baines realised his potential as a commercial artist and founded ' Baines Graphics', producing murals, cartoons, etc. He worked for many high profile companies, the likes of BP Australia, The Australian Grand Prix, S.A. Soccer Federation and numerous publications. After long consideration Baines committed himself to being a full-time artist. His surrealist style of combining the stark contrast of black suits and bowler hats within a serene backdrop of the beach, has resulted in Baines becoming one of Australia’s most recognisable and collectable contemporary artists.
