Espace Louis Vuitton Singapore and the School of the Arts, Singapore (SOTA) have come together in an unique collaboration with an exhibition that showcases the work of American contemporary artist Daniel Arsham in Singapore for the first time. The exhibition will be ongoing until March 2014.
This two-part exhibition held at Espace Louis Vuitton Singapore and SOTA Gallery is a continuation of Arsham's ongoing collaboration with Louis Vuitton. In May 2013, a selection of Arsham's Easter Island drawings were featured in the "Travel Book" collection; a series of unique guide books that combine a travel journal and a sketch book
#YesterdaysFutures (Part l), held at Espace Louis Vuitton Singapore, interprets the surviving monument statues of Easter Island in a series of drawings and sculptural works that together create a ficitional archaeology informed by Arsham's personal experience on the Island.
The drawings depict the Moai statues that have made the Island famous and quotidian scenes of the town and people, while the sculptural works are made from modern objects such as pay phones, cameras and film projectors, recreated in materials like volcanic ash and crystal.
This show also features a selection of pieces created as part of the ongoing Louis Vuitton-SOTA Arts Excellence Programme. Arsham, in collaboration with SOTA students, has identified everyday objects and re-created them in sand and plaster as decayed replicas, to give the appearance of being unearthed ina future archaeological site.
#YesterdaysFutures (Part ll), the second part of the exhibition held at SOTA Gallery, further reflects Arsham's collaboration with the students and showcases the outcome of the creative cooperation between them.
