ANG Yian Sann biography | artworks | events

Ang YianSann is a Singapore's contemporary industrial designer/artist who works with the integration of inknography and extemporize design. He inknographs and extemporizes selected objects, images and spaces based on his conceptual theory of inknography since 1998. Inknography is a process which explicitly extemporize and discard information via images or selected objects as a form of extemporized-based painting or objects of design. It a way of observational seeing and is about an enclosure via disclosure perspective. It deals with the post-digital revolution of customization and mass-customization production as a form of art making from an information-based economy to the conceptual-based society.

He graduated with a Master degree in Industrial Design (by Research) from the Melbourne Institute of Technology, Australia from 1995-1998 on a study scholarship from the Lee Foundation, as well as obtained a Diploma in Art from the LaSalleSIA College of the Arts in Singapore from 1986-1998.From 1990-1995, he works as an industrial designer prior to his post-graduate research study in Melbourne. He was an academic Fellow at the Department of Architecture, National University of Singapore and lectured on industrial design and art creativity from 1999-2002, as well as taught at the LaSalle College of the Arts, Singapore from 2004-2006. In 2006, he give a public guest lecture entitled: " Enclosure Via Disclosure Perspective" at the Hue Univerisity, Hue College of the Arts, Vietnam.

Since 1982, his interest in art began in the remote Ama Keng Village, Lim Chu Kang because of a deep reflection of his childhood days in the village. A very critical incidence of kite-making and flying hobby leaves a very impactful memory on creativity and art-making. He almost lost his young life while in the pursue of this interest and fell into his backyard spring well and did not drown, but came up alone and lives. It was a re-birth and he was grateful since. Since then, he produced a series of drawings and water-colours-based paintings while pursuing his private college study and was particularly influenced by Singapore's second generation artists like Goh Beng Kwan, Tan Swie Hien and Teo Eng Seng. But more importantly, an exhibition of Paul Klee, a member of Bauhaus, had a 61 works from the Modern Art Museum, Dusseldorf at the National Museum Art Gallery of Singapore. It was an intellectually simulating exhibition for him. This influences his "Lotus and Dancer Series" since 1985.

He began exhibiting his work at the Painting of the Year Award organised by United Overseas Bank Group held at the National Museum Art Gallery. From 1986-1989, he pursue an art and design study at newly founded LaSalleSIA College of the Arts founded by Brother Joseph McNally in 1985. While at LaSalleSIA College of the Arts, his work of art "One's Habitat" 1988 won the Top Grand Prize of the Painting of the Year 1988 by the United Overseas Bank Group, the youngest artist to do so since it started in 1982. In 1992, he presented a conceptual art "Computer Garden"(1989) concept prototype - an information-based computer system based on green design and the IT garden of Singapore, as part of his his solo exhibition at the National Museum Art Gallery. In 1995, moved to Melbourne for his post-graduate study and awarded a research tutorship at the Department of Industrial Design in co-teaching Experimental Design. In 1989, he returned to Singapore and was a Fellow at the Department of Architecture, National University of Singapore from 1999-2002. In 2002, co-founded VONGYIS with Graphic Designer, Tan Yian-Ling and works between his studios in Singapore and Vietnam in art and design practices.
