Rethink - Ordinary
by Sculpture Square
Location: Sculpture Square
Artist(s): Joanna TANG
Date: 11 Feb - 25 Feb 2011

Working on the theme of the “Mundane”, Joanna aspires to encourage people who walk into her exhibition to re-think about ordinariness. Objects we see, hear, listen and feel everyday seem to easily slither our attention away as though they seem insignificant when fact of the matter is, they do matter in our lives. It is of little realization that we see how significant these objects are there for a purpose and a reason – to be, there. If we were to jot down the things we do every day (on a par norm basis) in a notebook, a sudden realization will strike us – we actually cannot live without these things and more than often, we take the existence of these objects for granted as we pass a day after another.

Rethink – Ordinary re-enacts the basics of every day ordinariness; of which Joanna calls it the “Mundane Scene”. Although things and processes one deems mundane may not be the same for another person. However, through the installation of a basic “Mundane Scene”, she thrives in building a certain tension to the surfaces and materials used to invoke the curiosity senses and intrigue her audiences. Joanna chooses to work with mainly artificial and natural materials as a playful take on ordinary everyday objects, forms and colors. It is a matchmaking of the many “mundanes” from every day – transforming and turning them from its ordinariness to something extraordinary. If your perception can be changed from rethinking the ordinariness through her installation, she has achieved her purpose and goal forRethink – Ordinary.

Joanna Tang is Sculpture Square’s Artist-in-Residence for January/February 2011. This is her first Artist-in-Residence programme and definitely not her last.
