Drawing Circus
by Sculpture Square
Location: Sculpture Square
Artist(s): LIM Shing Ee
Date: 5 Feb - 7 Mar 2010

While known for her past works using ink and paper as her usual medium, Lim, in Drawing Circus, frees herself from spatial limitations by creating an installation that encompasses nearly the entire Chapel gallery, creating a visual spectacle as she conceptualizes and plays with the imagery of the circus. The floor, the walls, the ceiling are donned with circus-like figures; flags, poles; all of which inject a festive tone, drawing the viewer further into the bewilderment of a simulated circus.

Intrinsically, Lim not only draws onto the space given but also draws from it. Extracting elements such as the arches, entrance, doorways, she conceptualizes the various shapes and forms of the individual objects and their arrangement. Hence the connections formed are not only bound between the audience and the artwork but also the understated relationship that manifests between the artwork and the space.

Lim’s artistic style has always been unmistakably minimalistic and this subtle confidence has been her signature as an artist. According to Lim, the form or shape of each object in the installation relates to one another in a ‘push and pull’ manner, all of which result in an interwoven yet harmonious rhapsody originating from a bizarre and somewhat illogical arrangement.
