Half Dead Things - The Tracing Rope 2011
by Dr. PARK Gallery
Location: Dr. PARK Gallery
Artist(s): Hai Min Sun LEE
Date: 13 Aug - 11 Sep 2011

"I meant to say about the dynamic interaction between individuals as a condition of living more than what is the living things, the significance or the worth of life, distinquishment of living things from non-living things. When one individual contact with another individual, a new characteristic is born from the point of contact while the primary characteristics of each individual still don't change. It occurs between living things, living things and non-living things or non-living things directed and controlled by human. As long as a life cannot survive without support of other organisms, I think that such a contact could be an important condition of living. Of course, I am not saying all of contact with other individuals mean living by itself.

The animal shapes frequently found in my works are not merely for showing up animals or animality made up of other objects. Instead, I intended to suggest other condition of living or characteristic through the new shapes caused by blueprints, the characteristics of wooden supports and plastic bags and the point of contact with them.

The reason why this exhibition was titled "The Tracing Rope" is because I wanted to emphasize the interaction between individuals. When individuals are tied by a rope, it may mean the restriction on the individuals and the inactivity of them. However, it also implies that each individual accepts one another and tolerates the different characteristics of the other one. The property of bond or contact varies with the types of individuals which meet each other. You can find many different ropes in my works for this exhibition. I think the rope makes a connection between individuals. In other word, the rope creates a new condition of living through the contact between organisms, without any change on their nature just like a chemical transformation and damage on their exerior forms. It preserves the shape and nature of each individual, but at the same time it gives a new nature and condition of living to them. That's the reason why I was interested in it and in my work I have traced the lines and relations which the rope made on each individual or object while linking one to another."
