It is hard to account for Suh’s figure painting based on the conventional values of portraiture. His simple, intense brushstrokes make it difficult to define a detailed, individual identity. His figures made with such brushstrokes demonstrate his efforts and attempts to grasp each individual’s psychological state, social relationships, and the nature of certain historical incidents, moving beyond the conventional value of figure painting, which is capturing a certain likeness. The images mostly evoking strong impressions and the forms intensely rendered with decisive lines are the answers Suh has presented after incessantly and persistently observing objects and figures. Suh presently has reached a singular idiom that has become much simpler and clearer than before. His restrained rhetoric is more straightforward, leading viewers more clearly to the feelings and emotions of the situations and figures he depicts. A Dog Man shows one who is in a humiliating state after suffering defeat, A Waiting Man features a figure in despair and severely alienated after losing hope, and Nosangun, Sejo shows the cold-heartedness of a power struggle that leads even family members to death. Suh’s figures, including his self-portraits, emerge as the suspects and underdogs of history. Suh, however, does not simply make a distinction between the aggressors and the victims.
