Artificial Landscapes
by Gallery We
Location: Gallery We
Artist(s): Jongsook KIM
Date: 22 Apr - 2 May 2013

Using hundreds of crystal, Jong Sook Kim makes a landscape to talk about the consumerism society rather than extravagance. The Oriental landscape has been a symbole of consumption like jewel in Western countries and implied material civilization.
A mix of crystal and old Korean painting 'Fairy Land in Dream' seems to have a double meaning but esthetic elements of painting provided by the artist, the beautiful landscape and visual spectacle of Swarovski introduce a fake display of utopia.
Composition and flexible flow of pattered crystal present her mature use of materials. Each small crystal makes a kind of line drawing as glittering on a printed image, which recreate already completed objet in a large-scale. This process made a mysterious landscape consisting of light's vibration, and this landscape, symbolizing characteristics of current consumer society, is contrasted with Korean traditional one.
